60 minutes of reading = 1 badge
We know most of your preschoolers may not be reading on their own yet, but these are integral times for your children to develop a love for reading and help them to prepare to read! When you read to your children, you're helping to instill life-long skills into your children's developing minds.
So how does the summer reading program help? We encourage parents to read to their children. Anything: a picture book, a cereal box, the newspaper, etc.
When reading to your children, point out letters for your child to identify and colors throughout the pages. At the end of the stories, ask if they remember the name of the main character or what animal was in the book to work on comprehension and following the narration.
When logging books, you can log the minutes you've read to your child on their READsquared profile under your family account.
For more information on how to make reading fun and prepare your little minds to learn to read, check out our Every Child Ready to Read page to explore the five principles of prepping to read: play, write, sing, read, and talk.
120 minutes of reading = 1 badge
The Summer Reading Program is a great challenge for children in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. It provides an opportunity for students to read and get cool prizes. When schools let out, children often do not pick up a book until the start of the next school year. This can have detrimental cognitive effects on students. It is often referred to as the "summer slide" where children backslide with their reading and comprehension because it hasn't been a priority over the summer. OCPL and other libraries around the country are here to combat that with fun programs, incentives, and activities to promote and encourage children to read throughout the summer!
Kids will log their minutes on the READsquared app and be entered into weekly prize drawings and win individual prizes too! Keep a lookout on the app to see what you win!
180 minutes of reading = 1 badge
Teens in grades 6-12 are encouraged to sign up for the Summer Reading program and participate in the great activities that are planned throughout the county. The summer slide is just as real for teens and we want to encourage reading throughout the summer to teens as well.
Teens will log their minutes read in READsquared and be eligible for weekly drawings for gift card prizes and other prizes!
1 book = 1 badge
We welcome adults to participate in the summer reading program as well! Weekly prizes include gift cards with OCPL swag and a grand prize Kindle Fire drawing at the end of summer!

Help
- When creating a READSqaured account, you only need to create one account for the whole family. Create your family account and then add each adult, teen and/or child reader in your family.
- When logging minutes, you can track the week and do it all at once, or individually if you want to be more specific (i.e. bedtime storytime - 180 minutes) You DO NOT have to put in book details---just minutes will do unless you want to track.
- PreK, kids and teens log minutes read; adults log books read.
- Collect badges. The more you read the more you get!
- We will pull prizes every Friday. So be sure to listen to your phone for a message or check your email each Monday.
