The Appraisal Division is responsible for maintaining the real property data base, including listing and measuring all real estate improvements in the County. County appraisers routinely visit properties based on building permits and property review requests submitted by taxpayers.
Although most new construction is listed based on the issuance of building permits, it is the property owner's responsibility to list any additions or new improvements during the annual listing period in January. Failure to list results in a 10% penalty for each listing period which has lapsed since the improvement should have been listed.
The Appraisal Division is also responsible for conducting countywide general reappraisals. Onslow County is currently on a four year revaluation cycle, with the next countywide revaluation scheduled for January 1, 2014.
