[ARCHIVED] Statement on the Passing of Former Chairman Delma Collins

Delma Collins

Delma Collins who served on the Onslow County Board of Commissioners from 2000-2008 and was Chairman for five of those years, passed away at age 74 on June, 15, 2022.

Collins joined the Jacksonville Police Department at 21 years old and retired from there with 30 years of service. While serving on the Onslow County Board of Commissioners he spearheaded the creation of the Onslow Water and Sewer Authority and was instrumental in the implementation of a Joint Land Use Plan with Camp Lejeune that would ensure the base remained free of encroaching development.

Jack Bright, Chairman of the Onslow County Board of Commissioners issued a statement:

Delma Collins was a beloved public servant who helped lead the Jacksonville Police Department and was admired by his friends and colleagues for his sense of humor.

After retirement Collins continued to serve his community as a County Commissioner. He was elected as Chairman of the Onslow County Board of Commissioners during his first term and served in that capacity for five of his eight-year tenure as an Onslow County Commissioner.

Onslow County is indebted to Delma Collins for his commitment to the creation of ONWASA and his work with Camp Lejeune to create a Joint Land Use Plan which ensured that the base would be able to continue its mission in Onslow County.

Delma Collins dedicated his life to service and our community is richer for it. I offer condolences to his family and ask for prayers and remembrances to help console their loss.
