Onslow County is monitoring Hurricane Idalia and adjusting the availability of some County services due to weather related concerns. Onslow County urges everyone to prepare now for a potential power loss and heavy rain. If you have special needs that require electricity, please ensure you have a personal backup plan.
Closures and Delays
The Onslow County Government Center, Consolidated Health & Human Services building, Senior Center, Congregate Nutrition Sites, Animal Services, Onslow County Museum, all public libraries, Board of Elections, and the Register of Deeds will be closed on Thursday, August 31, 2023. All Onslow County Courts and the Onslow County Courthouse will also be closed on Thursday.
Albert J. Ellis Airport Impact
The Albert J. Ellis Airport will be open as long as it remains safe for aircraft operations. Flight disruptions are possible and travelers are advised to confirm their flight’s status online with their airline prior to traveling to the airport. Airlines are also waiving change fees and impacted travelers may make preemptive changes to their travel plans.
Solid Waste Landfill
Onslow Solid Waste Landfill will operate normal business hours on Thursday, August 31, 2023.
County Operations and Updates
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office, Onslow County Emergency Services, and Onslow County Animal Control will continue to provide services during the weather event.A limited staff activation of the County’s Emergency Operations Center will occur during the event. Emergency shelters are not expected to be opened at this time however staff are standing by in case the need arises.
Onslow County Schools
Due to the potential for high winds, and flooding rainfall, Onslow County Schools will be closed for all students on Thursday, August 31.
After-school and evening activities - including after-school care - will be cancelled for Wednesday, August 30 and Thursday, August 31.
Unless notified by their supervisor, school will also be closed for OCS staff on Thursday, August 31.
Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River
On August 31 only essential personnel are required to report to work.
MCCS facilities, to include the Child Development Centers, Fitness Centers and Marine Marts across Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River will be closed on Thursday, Aug. 31. MCCS will endeavor to reestablish some services later on Thursday if conditions permit.

The Commissary on Camp Lejeune and MCAS New River will remain open for normal operations.

Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, branch clinics, and pharmacies will be closed for regular appointments and outpatient services on Thursday, August 31. The Trauma Center, Emergency Department, and Labor and Delivery will remain open for emergencies only.
