ONSLOW COUNTY, NC— The Onslow County Fire Marshal’s Office and the Onslow County Chapter of the American Red Cross are calling for volunteers to help our community stay safe. As part of the Eastern North Carolina Home Fire Campaign, volunteers are needed to assist firefighters with installing smoke alarms in Onslow County homes and neighborhoods. According to Onslow County Fire Marshal Brian Kelly, seven people die each day in the United States from home fires; that averages to two home fire deaths per year in Onslow County. The overall goal of the Eastern North Carolina Home Fire Campaign is to eliminate home fire deaths in Onslow County. The Eastern North Carolina Fire Campaign needs volunteers who may assist either monthly or as their schedule permits. Monthly volunteers will meet on the first Saturday of each month for smoke alarm installation. Other volunteers may help out weekly or a several days a month, depending upon their schedule.The next volunteer event will be Saturday, August 5th. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Onslow County Red Cross office located at 12 Ruth Street in Jacksonville, NC.Those wishing to volunteer may call the local Red Cross office at (910) 347-3581.
