Our office is always interested in recruiting new workers to be Precinct Officials. Precinct Officials are the people who you see at the polls working. Without Precinct Officials we could not hold successful elections.
Qualifications

Must be a registered voter

Must be a resident of the county in which the precinct is located

Must not be an elected government official or a manager or treasurer for any candidate or political party

Must not be a candidate in the election
How Appointed
Precinct officials can be recommended by the political parties and are appointed by the Board of Elections for a two-year term beginning in August of odd-numbered years.
Positions
Chief Judge: The Chief Judge is responsible for picking up the equipment from the warehouse the day before the election. He sets up the polling site and assigns the duties to the other judges and assistants. He is in charge of the polling site the day of the election. He is in charge of the breakdown of the site on election night and returning the equipment and election results to the Board of Elections (BOE) office that night. Currently, the pay is $9.00 per hour.
Judge: There are two judges- one each from the two major political parties. The Judge performs any task the Chief Judge assigns him which might include checking in voters, monitoring the tabulator, working the provisional ballot table or attaching the name labels in the poll book. Currently, the pay is $8.00 per hour.
Assistant: The assistant may perform duties such as assisting curbside voters, helping to maintain the voters in line, and anything else the Chief Judge may assign. Currently, the pay is $7.00 per hour.
Training
All officials are required to attend training sessions conducted by the County Board of Elections prior to each major primary and general election. This is paid training for Chief Judges and Judges.
Election Day Checklist

Wear comfortable clothing and dress in layers for optimum comfort to account for varying temperatures

Leave your campaign buttons and political jewelry at home

Discussion of politics is not permitted while working at the polls

Arrange for enough food and drinks for the entire day

Smoking is not permitted in the voting place
