Childhood Vaccines

Why Are Vaccines Important for Children?

Babies are born with immature immune systems. They do share some immunities with their mothers through vaccines received during pregnancy and through breastmilk, but vaccines are the best way to further strengthen infants' and children's immune systems safely and effectively. Children receiving vaccines on schedule have better protection from dangerous infections and diseases. When children are properly vaccinated, they will also be less likely to spread diseases to others who cannot get vaccinated due to medical conditions. For more information on vaccines, speak with your healthcare provider or visit the CDC website.

Why Get Your Vaccinations at Onslow County Health Department?

Our highly-trained immunization staff use best practice care following the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as well as Centers of Disease Control (CDC) recommended and required vaccine schedules. We use the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR) to document all vaccines, which creates statewide access to your record for other providers and schools. With our client-centered focus care, we offer vaccines during every visit to the Health Department. When you have a Well Child Visit, your shot record is reviewed and you are offered all recommended and required vaccines. We have in inventory all preventive state and private vaccines. Our compassionate staff use combination vaccines, which limit the number of shots given at any one visit while providing the greatest coverage and preventive care. Required School Vaccinations

The North Carolina General Statutes (G.S. 130A-152(a)) require immunizations for every child present in this state. We offer all the required and recommended vaccines for school. If you are entering a North Carolina school for the first time, you will also need a school physical. We will schedule the physical and immunizations in a single visit, making it more convenient for you.
