What To Expect

Well child physical exams can be performed for children through the age of 20 including: daycare, pre-k, kindergarten, and school physicals. Physicals are performed by a qualified health care provider. We provide services to Uninsured, Medicaid, and Insured.


Physical examinations include:

  • Autism Screen (if indicated)
  • Blood lead testing under 6 years of age
  • Dental varnish application-under 42 months
  • Developmental screening
  • Head-to-toe physical
  • Hearing and vision screen
  • Hemoglobin testing (if indicated)
  • Lead monitoring with referral
  • Lipids profile (If indicated)
  • On-site immunization clinic
  • Sickle Cell (If indicated)

A referral will be made to a physician for diagnosing of a medical problem.

Please note that the Onslow County Health Department does not provide the services of sports physicals or "sick" visits.

Recommended Check-Up Schedule

The Health Department recommends the following schedule for child physicals:
  • 2 week old
  • 2 months
  • 4 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months (optional)
  • 12 months
  • 15 months (optional)
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 2 - 20 years, once a year

What To Bring

You will need the following items for your appointment:

  • Child's shot record
  • Child's social security number
  • Insurance card(s)
  • Proof of household income

If not the parent or guardian, please bring Power of Attorney and/or Authorized Care.
