North Carolina state law requires that a permit shall be obtained from the local Health Department before engaging in the practice of tattooing. Every tattoo artist approved by the department shall operate in a location which meets all the requirements of the rules.
All tattoo permits are valid for one year from the date the permit is issued. If a tattoo artist moves to another approved location, an application and fee will be required to be submitted to the Health Department. An inspection of the new facility as well as the tattoo artist will be conducted.
