The Onslow Board of Commissioners has voted to support an affordable housing project that they hope will help many county residents. In a unanimous vote, the board voted to support a proposal from Carolina Statewide Development LLC, an Onslow County firm which proposed a maximum of 180 units in Jacksonville.

There is an estimated 2,100-unit deficit in affordable housing in Onslow County.  As the Commissioners considered spending from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 they agreed to invite proposals for firms to use up to $5 million of the fund to create affordable housing in the County.

Seven proposals were submitted, and a scoring team narrowed the list to three who were to give presentations today before a special meeting of the Commissioners. One firm withdrew from consideration over an issue with property they had hoped to use.

After presentations from Carolina Statewide Development LLC and Solstice Partners LLC, the board voted to award the funding to Carolina Statewide Development which proposed an 82-unit development in Jacksonville Commons with the potential to increase the number of units to 180.

In other action during the workshop session Monday (December 13, 2021), the Commissioners considered closing some solid waste mobile collection convenience sites during 2022. They also agreed to consider a panhandling ordinance and the board adopted a Public Records Policy.

The Board declined to consider at this time a noise ordinance indicating that there did not seem to be a significant call for such regulation.
