Albert J. Ellis Airport is excited to announce the arrival of the 10,000,000th passenger at OAJ. James Raymond from Michigan who travelled to Jacksonville, NC to visit family was the lucky passenger and was presented with a gift bag to mark the occasion. Mr. Raymond arrived on Delta flight DC 4958.
This incredible milestone is a testament to the continued growth and success of the airport which saw its first flight take off over 52 years ago on February 15, 1971. Since the initial runway and terminal were completed, Albert J. Ellis Airport has experienced multiple expansion projects including construction of a two-story terminal, air traffic control tower, and a soon to be completed runway extension.
Celebrating today’s milestone, Mitch Sprunger, Interim Airport Director, says the sky’s the limit at OAJ. “We are delighted to mark yet another significant milestone in the airport’s history welcoming Albert J. Ellis Airport’s 10 millionth passenger to the airport. It’s been a fantastic 52 years with so many great highlights and milestones achieved along the way. During this time OAJ has continued to grow and provide critically important access to and from Onslow County. I’d like to thank OAJ’s customers, airline partners, and in particular the airport staff who continue to play a very important role in helping the airport and OAJ ensure the passenger experience continues to be both a smooth and pleasant one.”
The Albert J. Ellis Airport has continuously served Eastern North Carolina since opening in February 1971. The County-owned and operated airport in western Onslow County is one of 10 commercial service facilities in North Carolina’s system offering a 7,100-foot runway, modern ATCT, and three gates. OAJ airport data shows a 29% increase in aircraft operations so far this year when compared to the previous year’s flight data. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines both offer service at the Airport with flights to major hubs as do several charter companies. The Airport also welcomes private, corporate, military, medical, agricultural, cargo and government aircraft daily.
